Picasso is the only other modern painter whose powers of invention are as awe-inspiring, yet, beside the mighty Hidalgo cycle in the stairwell of the Palacio de Gobierno, such a cerebral fantasy as the «Guernica» seems almost like a game with cutouts. The subject is the same – the horror and pity of war – but, to little in the common heritage, Orozco was able to take a number of perfectly familiar historical events (familiar to the Mexicans, that is) and on that «story line» magnify the human material into symbolic images.
