biografische angaben: Born 1845 in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania, died 1926. American painter. Studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia. She went to Paris for further training and settled there permanently in 1874. Influenced by the impressionists, she became friendly with Edgar Degas and worked closely with him. She was a superb draftsman and is best known for her depictions of mothers and children. The remarkable set of etchings/aquatints that she produced in 1890 reflect the influence of Japanese art. She had great success in Europe, and trought the advice and help she gave her wealthy collector friends she was instrumental in making impressionaist paintings popular in this country [USA].
