biografische angaben: Born 1910 in Vitebsk, Russia, died 2000 in Scarsdale, New York. He came to the United States with his family in 1922. As a boy he studied with an early teacher of Marc Chagall, and he later continued his training at the School of the Art Institute. In Chicago he worked as a commercial artist and lithographer and was associated with the Works Progress Administration in the 1930s. Soon after completing his mural at the Wilmette Post Office he moved to New York. He taught at the Art Student's League from 1961 to 1970 and the National Academy of Design in the 1970s and 1980s. He also designed theater sets.
