biografische angaben: Born 1899 in Idaho Falls, Idaho, died 1993. He came to Chicago at age seventeen to study at the School of the Art Institute. His early training in china painting enabled him to help ceramist Eugene Deutch establish a pottery that operated in Chicago until the 1950s. During his four years as apprentice to artist-craftsman Alfonso Ianelli, he developed the many artistic skills that led to his reputation as a Renaissance man. He worked as sculptor, muralist, graphic artist, ceramist, mosaicist, stained glass artist, architect, and designer. In 1927 he and portrait painter Sol Kogen transformed a group of small residences on West Burton Street into artists' studios, embellishing them with carved wood and plaster reliefs, leaded glass, tiles, mosaic, and frescoes. This was the beginning of the artistic community known as Old Town. He worked with many of the leading Chicago architects to design decorations for their buildings. The murals he created for the 1933 Century of Progress Exposition brought him sculptural relief commissons for the Technological Center at Northwestern University and the U.S. Gypsum Building. His etched glass panels from the now demolished Diana Court are in the collection of the Art Institute. His work can be seen at the Tavern and Standard Clubs and at Kelvyn Park High School.
