Played an active role in the art world of Chicago at the turn of the century as a portrait painter and as president of the Chicago Society of Artists, the Municipal Art League, and the Art Commission of Chicago and Illinois. He was a founder of the Cliff Dwellers Club that grew out of the weekly meetings of a group of artists and other creative people who met in his Fine Arts Building studio. Clarkson maintained a studio in the building until his death.
