She emigrated to New York City in 1920. She studied at the Cooper Union Art School, where she studied with Austin Purvis, Jr. and John Stewart Curry. She joined the New York city WPA Federal Arts Project. In 1939, she was commissioned to paint murals for Bronx Hospital, Rockefeller Center and the New York World's Fair. In 1946, she married artist Jack Levine. In 1979 she was elected into the National Academy of Design as an Associate member and became a full Academician in 1982.

Her work is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Whitney Museum.
