Highly respected by her peers, painter Ethel Magafan was one of the few women muralists commissioned by the New Deal Works Progress Administration. Together, with her twin sister Jenne, she promoted the Western School of Realism and later became particularly well known for these western themes as well as increasingly abstracted landscapes.
