«And yet in my home town of Alessandria […], two astonishing constructions appeared: one was Ignazio Gardella's antituberculosis dispensary, the other the postal building, upon which ran, along the entire lower section of its façade, a horizontal band of odd mosaics that had very little to do with Fascist iconography. As I later found out, they were by Gino Severini. That was my first contact with Modern art. It troubled me; I sensed that it was different from the official art of Fascism, but I wasn't yet ready to understand it.»
