I rejoined [William] Spratling for lunch at Sanborn's and we spoke of Covarrubias. We agreed that he will probably die in a few days if he can't be talked into going to a decent hospital. But Miguel insists that if he must go again to the hospital he will return to the state ward where he was so badly cut up and prematurely released. This is part of his Marxist complex. Better to die «collectively» than be saved in a «capitalist» private institution. It is a tragedy, because Covarrubias, who was never a first-rate artist, has become in the last two decades probably the greatest authority in the world on pre-Columbian sculpture. In addition he is a very sweet person, loved by his many friends.
