biografische angaben: 1887–1985. Marc Chagall moved to Paris from his native Vitebsk, Russia, at age twenty-three. He had studied in St. Petersburg, but it was the experimental school directed by theater designer Léon Bakst that influenced hin most. He brought vivid memories of the Russian-Jewish traditions of his childhood to Paris and found there the wild colors of the fauve artists and rearranged space of the cubists. He went back to Russia for a few years, and after the revolution he served as commissar of the arts, formed a free academy, and designed for the Yiddish theater until 1923. When he returned to Paris he became interested in the graphic arts, including book illustration, but he continued to paint and to design stage sets and costumes. Other projects included sculptures, ceramics, and stained glass windows such as those at the Art Institute of Chicago. He lived in New York from 1941 to 1948.
