CGT (Compagnie Générale Transatlantique) liner Normandie, built in 1935, was taken over by US Navy in 1941 and renamed USS Lafayette, but was burnt out and capsized in New York in 1942. Although refloated in 1943, she was laid up, and scrapped in 1946.
