The commission was long-term promoted by Abby Aldrich Rockefeller and stood in conjunction with the retrospective of Rivera in the Museum of Modern Art in 1931—32. The realisation of it was stopped after the publicity caused by the article of Joseph Lilly with the headline "Rivera Perpetuates Scenes of Communist Activity for R.C.A. Walls — and Rockefeller, Jr., Foots Bill" in World Telegram on April 24th, 1933, then destroyed in 1934 following the notorious controversy between Nelson A. Rockefeller and Diego Rivera. Today, instead of it, there can be seen a mural cycle by Josep Maria Sert. Rivera created a smaller version of Man at the Crossroads in the Palacio de Bellas Artes (Opera House) in Mexico City with the title Man, Controller of the Universe, in 1934.
