+: «A number of paintings were made as war memorials, including the Victory Hall at Balcombe, East Sussex by Neville Lytton and the little-known panels at Heanor School, Derbyshire by F. Cayley Robinson. These continued the elegiac feeling of loss and regret conveyed by the 1916 [Royal Academy] exhibition pieces. Their locations in community buildings were a fulfilment of the idea of murals being an art of the people. The Balcombe scheme was promoted by a local resident, Lady Denman, who in 1915 introduced the Canadian idea of the Women's Institute to Britain, one of its aims being a democratization of art and craft. The artist was a member of the liberal aristocracy and an Olympic bronze medallist in real tennis in 1908. War memorial subjects are otherwise relatively rare in murals, owing perhaps to the preference for sculpture in outdoor locations.» (Powers, 2013, p. 33)
