+: 21 frescoe panels (65 m2), which Rivera made for the New Workers' School of the Lovestoneites, a right wing split off of the Communist Party of the USA (CPUSA). One of the directors of the school was Bertram D. Wolfe, a friend and later biographer of Rivera. Rivera used USD 7'000 left from his Rockefeller commission in Radio City to realise the paintings.
In 1941 the group and its school dissolved and the panels were offered to the International Ladies Garment Workers Union ILGWU, which only exposed 13 of them: Colonial America, Revolution and Reaction, Expansion, Conflict on Slavery, Civil War, Reconstruction, Workers' Movement, Class Struggle, Imperialism, The Great Depression, Division and Repression, Hitler. These panels, exposed in Forrest Park, were destroyed by a blaze and only the censured 8 panels were saved. The New Deal is in the Museum Skissernas in Lund, five others in the collection of Luis Echeverría in Mexico, one in a private collection in New York and one in the Nagoya City Art Museum in Japan.
